Dear Ken Cheng: Do You Ever Have Meetings Where You Want To Punch Someone?

Our resident corporate Agony Uncle, CEO Ken Cheng, tackles business challenges – so you don’t have to.

Dear Ken Cheng,

Do you ever have meetings where you want to punch someone? I have been getting sudden urges and I’m not sure I can control them any longer!

– Katy, Brentford

Ken Cheng:

Feeling the urge to punch someone is completely normal. I feel it three to five times an hour.

However, doing it to another employee? A big no-no! It tends to hurt company morale when you hit your marketing officer Trent in the face, no matter how annoying he is.

Freelancers? That’s another story. We had our company Spring Mixer the other week and once of our hired entertainers annoyed the hell out of me.

He was a “contact juggler”, doing tricks with this shiny glass ball, and impressing all my employees. People were saying “oooh” and “ahhh” and it was taking focus away from the achievements my company had achieved this financial year.

So I punched him.

I don’t know where this sudden urge came from, but my instinct was to hit the guy. The whole thing really started to trigger me and I am in the long process of figuring out why.

I guess I feel he was being rude by hogging the guests’ attention when the event should have been about me. That felt like a personal attack. So I attacked him back.

We paid him double for his time, so everyone won, really.

Violence is sometimes healthy and, in fact, encouraged.
