Dear Ken Cheng: My Boss Secretly Films The Office

Our resident corporate Agony Uncle, CEO Ken Cheng, tackles business challenges – so you don’t have to.

Dear Ken Cheng,

It emerged that our boss has been secretly filming the office for the last few months. Is this illegal and should I do something about this?

– Sandra, Middlesex

Ken Cheng:

No.

It is illegal.

But lots of things are illegal that can help people.

Online piracy can boost an artist’s career. Drunk driving can get you home quicker. And secretly filming your employees can prevent a further crime down the road.

Let me tell you a story. I once filmed one of my employees and noticed he was going to the toilet a lot.

He was taking toilet breaks every half hour. I found this deeply suspicious. He could be dealing drugs or organising illegal gambling rings.

I followed him into the men’s and kicked the cubicle door open (it was unlocked.)

He was merely doing a number 2, which he had been every time.

The regularity was converting so I sent him to the GPs.

Bowel cancer. Undiagnosed.

The doctor said we caught it just in time.

Spying on your workers could save a life.
