Our resident corporate Agony Uncle, CEO Ken Cheng, tackles business challenges – so you don’t have to.

Dear Ken Cheng,

You write great hooks for LinkedIn. How do you do it?

Ken Cheng:

Simple.

I have always been a top tier attention seeker from birth.

Ever heard the saying, “if you are being attacked, don’t yell help, yell fire instead.”

Well, I use this in all sorts of situations, such as flagging down the waiter for a bill.

We live in an attention-based economy. As long as you get someone’s attention, anything you do is fair game.

I’m very good at making myself the centre of attention. One time, one of my ex-wife’s friends was telling a very entertaining anecdote at a party. I pretended to start choking on a cocktail sausage.

Suddenly, nobody was listening to my stupid friend and everyone was worried about what I was doing.

That’s how I approach LinkedIn. You have to spend every second on it making sure everyone knows if they are not paying attention to you, you might die.

Then you sell them something.
