Our resident corporate Agony Uncle, CEO Ken Cheng, tackles business challenges so you don’t have to:
Dear Ken Cheng,
How do you motivate people who seem to be completely checked out? I have a few employees who don’t seem as passionate about the job as when they joined.
– Sarah, Reading
Ah, the inevitable has happened. Your employees no longer show enthusiasm after an hour long commute into work on a Monday. Is this something you can prevent, or is it just part of life?
I say both.
The same thing happened with one of mine. For some reason, lesser mortals just don’t care much about B2B sales after several years.
That is unless you give them a reason to care. I had the perfect solution: I tricked them into thinking they were terminally ill.
Using an elaborate set of actors, fake blood and holographic special effects, Howard thought something was seriously wrong with him.
He then went to visit our inhouse Doctor on his “private healthcare plan”. The Doctor was an actor who played a small role on Casualty in the 90s.
Suddenly, knowing he only had 6 months to live gave him a new zest for life. He seemed to appreciate every moment, and worked twice as hard. He stayed late in the evenings and showed up early the next day. He was the ultimate worker.
It just goes to show: people don’t really appreciate how good their job is until they are faced with their own mortality.
Use that against them.
