Our resident corporate Agony Uncle, CEO Ken Cheng, tackles business challenges – so you don’t have to.
Dear Ken Cheng,
You’ve clearly set up many successful companies. But how did you go about setting up your first one? And how did you know it would be successful?
Ken Cheng:
Easy. Business is about building an empire, and who built the greatest empire of all? Genghis Khan.
One day, I woke up and looked in the mirror and said “I am Genghis Khan.” I started putting on Genghis Khan makeup and spoke basic Mongolian all day.
But this wasn’t enough. I ordered a full set of Mongolian battle armour off the internet – it was only investment I ever needed to make.
Since then, I have always thought about riding into battle on horseback (metaphorically, I can’t ride a horse).
I imagine myself going from village to village conquering them and slaughtering the residents.
That’s how it feels doing Mergers & Acquisitions.
Whenever I sign a contract, I imagine the contract is a poor farmer in Western Asia, and I am the mighty Genghis marking my territory.
You don’t need business school. You just need to learn from the best.
