Dear Ken Cheng: Should I Tell My Employees Their Data Has Been Leaked?

Our resident corporate Agony Uncle, CEO Ken Cheng, tackles business challenges – so you don’t have to

Dear Ken Cheng,

Help! I just learned that our entire employees’ database got hacked and all their data has been leaked. Should I tell them or keep it secret?

– Sharon, Stevenage

Ken Cheng:

Okay first, calm down. It’s just data.

“Man kills whole family using leaked data.” Ever seen this headline? No? Because it’s never happened.

Data isn’t guns. Or knives. Or other destructive weapons. You never hear about a village being obliterated using data.

I told my young daughter two horror stories: one about the boogeyman and one about her data being leaked. Guess which made her unable to sleep for days?

Hint: it wasn’t the data one.

Data leaks are just a myth invented by scaremongers who hate knowledge. It’s anti-intellectual.

I went on a date with a new woman and she asked where I grew up and when my birthday was.

Now, was I worried about her collecting my data, or was I thinking about falling in love?

You see, we give out our data all the time. It’s no different if it’s to your potential soulmate or to a giant company trying to exploit you for profit.
