I Saw An Employee With Another Boss And Felt White Hot Rage

In this week’s Agony Uncle surgery, Ken Cheng explains how looking for another job is the ultimate betrayal – and what to do about it.

Q. Why is it considered fine to look for other jobs while you still have one, whereas it’s not okay to date while you are in a relationship? Isn’t that a double standard? – Keith, Luton

A. THANK YOU KEITH. Finally, someone had the steel cojones to say it.

It is entirely a double standard. That’s why I treat anyone who works for me looking for a new company as a HUGE betrayal.

If I see you are browsing LinkedIn for jobs, that’s like catching my girlfriend with Hinge on her phone. If I find out you’ve gone for another interview, that’s like the time I tailgated my wife to see if she was meeting another man (she wasn’t – she was just going to the gym).

I once saw one of my employees talking to another boss at a networking event. I felt white hot rage. It was like walking in on my wife in bed with another man, but worse.

Here is the truth no one tells you about: jealousy is good. It shows you care.

Whether it’s in romance or in the workplace, it is normal to get extremely jealous when anyone interacts with someone who could be a serious threat to your masculinity.

That’s why I smashed up my employee’s computer when they browsed LinkedIn.

That’s why I hacked my employee’s e-mail and sent one to their potential new employer saying they can’t come to the interview because they had the runs.

That’s why I punched the other boss in the mouth.

It wasn’t out of jealous rage. It was out of love. Being controlling is a virtue.
